Cyst – How Are They Formed?

In order to understand a cyst, one must first realize what it is. A cyst is a closed sac that holds fluid, air, or semi-solid substances. Factors like acne can cause cysts to form. Cystic acne is a skin condition where cysts develop.

Most cysts are benign, although a biopsy is commonly performed to determine whether or not it is malignant. Infection, skin damage, and hormone abnormalities are some of the most prevalent causes of cyst formation. In rare circumstances, a genetic tendency for cyst development can also happen.

Types of Cysts

Cysts are very common but it is still important to know what different types are there that can form on your skin. This way you will have a better understanding of how to go forward with it, whether you let it be or have it removed.

  • Sebaceous Cyst. This is one of the most common types that are formed when the keratin fluid gets trapped near a damaged hair follicle. They can also happen when there’s a blockage underneath the skin. They can mostly be found on the scalp, face, neck, or back.
  • Epidermoid Cyst. This is another common type caused by keratin buildup. They appear swollen, red, and very painful when it gets infected. They can mostly be developing on the face, neck, head, and back.
  • Ganglion Cysts. They can look and sound scary but they are very common. They are round filled with fluid that usually appears near the tendons or joints. They usually develop on the hands, wrists, feet, and ankles.

Cysts – Should They Be Removed?

In most circumstances, a benign cyst does not require removal unless it is causing pain, discomfort, or consciousness problems. It is important to remove a cyst if it contains cancerous tissue or if is infected. An urgent removal of a skin cyst is typically required in these situations in order to prevent complications. But most of the time, cyst removal isn’t necessary unless you’re having problems with it.
